,Description
Everybody by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (2017) is a contemporary retelling of Everyman, the medieval morality play. In a wild existential romp through themes of identity, the value of life and the inevitability of death, the play uses humor, intensity and absurdity to explore issues of our times. Replete with archetypal characters of Death, Love, Time and God, the play features a lottery system to choose the character of Everybody, so that the role is played by a different actor in every performance. Through this, Jacobs-Jenkins intends to symbolize the randomness of death and the twists and turns of life that we often take for granted. Everybody was nominated for the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
