,Description
Commissioned by NBC in 1951, Amahl and the Night Visitors was the first opera written for television and aired on December 24th, 1951 introducing opera into households across the US. Composer and librettist Gian Carlo Menotti was inspired by the painting, The Adoration of the Magi by Hieronymus Bosch and his memories as a young child in Italy where children waited for the three kings to deliver their Christmas gifts. The story centers around a community of poor shepherds, specifically a mother and her child, sharing what little they have with the weary Magi enroute to visit a newborn king. Told in some of Menotti's most beautiful music, the story celebrates the love of family, the promise of faith and the true meaning of giving.
In concert under the baton of David Bloom, presented by Steinhardt programs in Vocal and Instrumental Performance, Cantor Theatre, Paulson Center, December 8-10, 2023
